MTV's Sonic & Knuckles Rock The Rock Special

Some of you may recall the Rock The Rock contest that SEGA did back in 94' to promote the at the time new game Sonic and Knuckles. Contestants from around the world competed by playing Sonic & Knuckles, and whoever collected the most rings under a time limit won. The winners from around the world were sent to Alcatraz prison, where they competed once more to win $25,000 and title of "World's Greatest Gamer". MTV aired a tv special for the contest back then as well. Recently, the tv special was uploaded to Bittorrent by GHZ, apparently on behalf of the Green Hill Zone. I'm just sharing it. I know some can't use Bittorrent, so I uploaded it to Yousendit as well. It is 309 mb and is 21 minutes and 36 seconds long. I figured at least someone would be interested. I also took a bunch of screencaps.

"You wanna throw down? My Knuckles can collect more rings than your Knuckles, bitch."

The winners were forced to put on prison uniforms and were escorted away by the authorities for the crime of OWNAGE.

Daisy Fuentes: "All I know is that Knuckles is this wild, red dreadlocked echidna thing with some really crazy, yet really smooth moves."

Bill wonders what the hell an echidna is, so Daisy explains.

MTV pays a visit to STI. A really evil sounding voice speaks through the voice box: "STI. What's the password?" The woman at the door answers "Knuckles".

Inside STI. This right here is interesting. Looks like early design sketches for Tiara Boobowski, from the famously scrapped Sonic Xtreme game.

A somewhat closer shot. I can't tell what the thing next to her is, it looks like some kind of robot.

I like how they use the Sonic & Knuckles style.

Roger explains what STI is and what they do.

STI hard at work. :P (Fyi, they were driving the remote controlled car around on the table)

Knux. Looks like there's an old Archie Sonic comic above him too.

Lots o' crap on the table.

Dean: "A game needs 3 things. It's gotta have astounding looks, it's gotta have great animation, and it must have an atmosphere that pulls the player straight into the game."

To warm them up, the contestants are placed in prison cells and play Sonic & Knuckles by themselves. Ah yes, to be locked into a former criminal's cell in Alcatraz prison while playing Sonic & Knuckles. Some things just feel so right.

After the semi-finals are done, only two are left standing: Chris Tang from Japan and Mark Guinane from the US. East vs. West.

For the final round, the contestants lock on Sonic 3 to Sonic & Knuckles and must collect as many rings as possible under a time limit at Lauch Base Zone.

Bill Bellamy: "Look at this, look at this, Knuckles is gettin' busy."

A WINNER IS YOU. The competition ends.

Chris is teh winnar.

Daisy Fuentes: "$25,000, what are you going to do now?"
